What is the best dog to get if you want a dog that hunts but is a good house companion as well. I had a Llewelin Setter and he was such a sweet dog. She started to show potential as a hunting dog but I was never able to get her house broke. It was one of the most frustrating times in my hunting experience.

 Smiley Nice forum Jason!   Cool

I have an English pointer pup. He's 14 wks old. Had a couple accidents first week that I had him but I think we have gotten past that now. I put him in a crate when I don't have time to watch him close, and I let him out everytime I need to go, and it has generally worked out pretty good so far.
Now if I could just get him to whoa, that would be great.

BTW: I love the spell checker! Thank you.

Lol - I'm with you there. I loved her to death but she was thick. She had the instinct but I think she was just to damn stubborn to know what to do with it. She was a little to old when I got her. I should have know better but I thought I could fix her. Didn't happen.

Yeah - the spell checker! My favorite too.

I've been owned by several different breeds of bird dogs over my years. My latest is a French Brittany and making one fine hunting dog with a terrific nose! She lives in the home with us and was easy to house break too. I put a doggie door in the back door so she comes and goes as she wants to her fenced backyard. I got her at 4-1/2 weeks old and she's now 17 months old. Best little dog I've ever had for hunting close to me and comes haste pronto or changes directions when I do!

At my age this may be my last bird dog but if I'd known of this breed prior, I'd have had one sooner!! I began hunting quail with her at 6 months old and she took to that like a duck to water! Hand delivered the first quail we got to my hand like she'd been doing it for years! Do yourself a favor as a foot hunter and look at these little dogs!

Hap,

I checked the server and it looks as though it is accepting pictures. The error that came up indicates that it may have been a problem on photo bucket. I did change 1 setting just in case so if you get a chance and you want to try again, feel free to do so.

Do you have to go thru photobucket?

Or can you drag pictures from C:/drive or something?

I see the insert img deal, but I haven't figured out how to use it.

I tried several different ways I could think of and none worked for me. I did delete the photobucket logo though.

  Thanks Jason!

Over the years, I had the pleasure on owning three different breeds of dog. My 1st dog was a Springer spaniel, male,(Luca) he was a great dog, but was very dominant, "Alpha" type, he was a real Pain in the butt to house break, but I have to say once he got it, he never had accidents, he had this way of staring you down until you got up off your butt and took him out to do his business. (I live in the city and had no yard for most of his life). The second dog was a Brit,(Jazz) she had a multitude of issues, but house breaking for the most part wasn't one of them, she really liked to chew things, most of the things she chewed belonged to my wife, so that was another issue I had to deal with, all in all she was a dog dog with a hell of a nose. My current dog is a Germen Wirehaired Pointer,(Angel) a friend gave her to me when she was 9 months old and pretty much totally house broke, she's a big, loveable goof, that is getting up in years, she's just about retired from hunting but has always got along with other dogs, cats and the kids, she has ways of letting you know if she has to go. If she does have an accident, pretty much its a bad one and she's sick, but thank goodness they're a few and far between. For the record, I wouldn't hesitate to get another of any of the 3 breeds I mentioned.
